Chief Master Sergeant John Bates' Obituary
Chief Master Sergeant Bates, United States Air Force (Retired), age 98, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Born on July 11, 1927, John lived a life of honor, service, and quiet strength. He proudly served in the military for over 30 years, dedicating his career to the defense of his country during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam era.
Through his service, he exemplified leadership, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to duty. Following his retirement from the Air Force, John began working for the State of Hawaii as a Purchasing Agent. He diligently performed his duties until his retirement, 10 years later.
In 1979 John became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Mu Beta Lambda Chapter in Honolulu, Hawaii, a membership that carries a unique responsibility — to honor the fraternity’s storied history while serving with humility and excellence in the spirit of aloha. It calls for strength of character, commitment to service, and the courage to lead with integrity wherever one stands, which were all the qualities John exemplified.
John is survived by his beloved wife of many years, Pearl. He is survived by his four children, Mark (Lois), Allen, Cynthia, Mona (Henry); seven grandchildren, Lorenzo III, Briana, Chanee, Brandi, Everett, Bryson, and Bryant; five great-grandchildren, Derick “DJ”, Jayten, Devin, Deyton, Moon; nephews, nieces, extended family and friends, all of whom will forever honor his legacy of service, humility, and love.
Chief Master Sergeant John Bates will be remembered as a devoted family man, a proud Airman, and a true American patriot.
Memorial services will conclude with military honors in recognition of his 30 years of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to any veterans' organization or Cancer Society
Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel. Visitation begins at 5:30 pm and service at 6:00 pm. Dining to take place after service.
