David Haw'n Kalama
David Emil Hau'oli Kalama, 73, of Rome, Italy, formerly of Haleiwa, Oahu, passed away suddenly on July 17, 2020 in Haleiwa. He was born on May 10, 1948 in Honolulu.
He was a member of the Haleiwa Evangelical Mission International, and was the IAFB European Ministries Director. He also did missionary work in Mexico through a surfing ministry and worked with churches in the Phiippines, some established earlier by his dad, Rev David M. Kalama.
David retired from the Marine Corps and was a decorated Vietnam veteran. He volunteered for and worked with Vietnam veterans. He also worked at the Kahala Hilton and laer at the Haleiwa Surf Center at Alii Beach Park.
As an avid surfer, David was known on the North Shore as Hawaiian (Haw'n). He assisted many yound people through out his years on "the beach".
David was preceded in death by his birth parents Joseph N Kahapea, Sr and Rebecca Panee Low; his adopted parents Rev David and Violet Kalama; sisters Luana Codero, Jonette Keliiholokai and Memory Cummings; brothers Joseph Pake Kahapea and Bernard G. Kahapea.
He is survived by his wife Olive Hortizuela Omaoeng Kalama of Rome, Italy; sisters Shirley Shimaoka of Oahu, Rebecca Clifford of California, Carlete Gonzales of Kauai; brothers Ernest Kahapea of California, Matthew Kahapea of Oahu, Jaseph N. Kahapea, Jr. of California, Peter Kahapea and Nathan Kalama of Kauai and Stacy Kahapea of Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private burial services will be at Schofield Barracks Post Cemetery on September 10, 2020 due to the pandemic. Mililani Memorial Mortuary is assisting with arrangements. Donations in David's (Haw'n's) mamory can be sent c/o Haleiwa Evangelical Mission International, P.O.Box1218, Haleiwa, HI, 96712.
