Memories of Ronald Ragasa and the Beavers AC
Aloha Ragasa Ohana,
I want to share my memories of Ronald Ragasa, starting from the years 1948 to 1955. During this period, we lived on Hall Street, close to Aala Park and near Beretania Street. As neighborhood kids, we spent our days playing together while our parents were at work.
In late 1948, our group decided to create a club dedicated to playing sports, and thus the Beavers AC was formed. We became part of the Police Activities League (PAL) program, with basketball becoming our favorite pastime. In the early 1950s, Stanley Fukuhara, known as "Coach Koji" from Palama, noticed our group playing and brought us together for basketball practices. The highlight came in 1954 when we participated in the PAL 14 years and under basketball championship at the old Hawaiian Pine Gym. Ronald, at age twelve, stood out as a tenacious ballhandler and playmaker while I played center. The Beavers AC enjoyed a successful season and ultimately defeated the Kalakaua AC’s Vandals in the championship game. Unfortunately, we did not take any photos during that time.
A few years later, the government condemned the Hall Street area to make way for new housing developments. As a result, we were displaced and our group never reunited.
I have often wondered about Ronald—where he went and what he ended up doing. My memories of him remain vivid: he was a childhood friend and a calm, fleet-footed basketball player.
